Junia Almeida was tired of driving to a day spa in Georgetown every day to work.
She and her husband, Carlos, moved to Frederick 3.5 years ago. They love the city and downtown.
"When we saw the location at 14 W. Patrick St., we knew it would be perfect to open my own day spa," said Almeida, owner of Verbena Day Spa.
A native of Brazil, Almeida said the couple and their three children live just five minutes from the spa location.
"I first thought I would work for someone here, to keep from driving all that way each day. But I had the chance to start my own business," she said.
Downtown Walk-Around: Frederick Businesses Bring Sexy Back

Verbena Day Spa on West Patrick Street was the only business listed in the article as a good place for "a nice, relaxing couples massage."
I asked the Vieira sisters, Evie and Victoria, who work at Verbena, what would make Frederick more sexy. They had a few ideas, including but not limited to: gondola rides on Carroll Creek (with candles), more romantic lighting, a 16-piece orchestra playing at all times, a dance floor, violinists provided with taxpayer dollars, big bowls of spaghetti to share, a hotel (one made of chocolate is preferable) and a pole-dancing studio.
